Smart tech driving the energy revolution begins at home – Telegraph.co.uk

A great deal of debate recently has centred on plans for “demand-side response” – that’s jargon for paying large users of power to switch off at times of high demand. But smart meter technology has the potential to create a smaller, more flexible power generation industry, which can handle peaks in demand without having to ask anyone to switch off. The UK is already beginning the development of a “smart grid”, which is more flexible, more local and more responsive to the changing consumption patterns of consumers. This will pave the way for decentralised power generation in much smaller units, as well as allowing customers to generate their own power through the wider deployment of micro technologies, such as fuel cells in boilers, rooftop solar, and heat pumps.
